Hidden Modernity: Fascination with the Occult around 1900

What can you expect?
For the first time in Vienna, the exhibition sheds light on the spiritual and esoteric currents around 1900 that had a lasting impact on art and society. Artists such as Munch, Gerstl and Schiele sought new forms of expression beyond materialism in symbolism, theosophy and spiritualism. Psychology, Far Eastern influences and the quest for the ‘new man’ also played a central role. The exhibition shows how closely modernism and magic were linked – with a critical look at utopias of the past and present.

What can you expect?
The exhibition shows a large selection from the German Viehof Collection for the first time in Austria. On display are works by 24 well-known artists, including Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys, Neo Rauch and Katharina Grosse. It offers an overview of the development of German art since the 1960s. The exchange between the loans and the Albertina’s own works is particularly exciting and opens up new perspectives.

The Radikal! exhibition brings together over 60 female artists from more than 20 countries who sought new ways of depicting modern life. Their works show how actively they helped to shape social change and responded to the challenges of their time.
Cézanne, Monet, Renoir: French Impressionism from the Museum Langmatt

What can you expect?
The exhibition at the Belvedere presents highlights from the Villa Langmatt collection – one of the earliest private collections of French Impressionists in Switzerland. Jenny and Sidney Brown began collecting works by artists such as Gauguin, Monet, Cézanne and especially Renoir in 1907. Their collection is an expression of their personal passion for art, but also symbolises the modern self-image of the Swiss upper middle classes.

The exhibition presents five large-scale installations by Nikita Kadan, Barbara Kapusta, Frida Orupabo, Lisl Ponger and Anita Witek. The show combines contemporary perspectives with art historical references, thus creating new interpretations and contexts. With further works by Alberto Giacometti, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fernand Léger, René Magritte, Man Ray and many others.

From 10 October you can see the contemporary artist Marina Abramović. Marina is a Serbian performance and conceptual artist, considered one of the most important representatives of performance art and body art, and is currently arguably the most famous performance artist in the world. And you can see her work in Vienna this year.
The exhibition was initially planned for the Kunstforum Wien, but was then moved to the Albertina Modern.

What can you expect?
For the first time in Vienna, the exhibition sheds light on the spiritual and esoteric currents around 1900 that had a lasting impact on art and society. Artists such as Munch, Gerstl and Schiele sought new forms of expression beyond materialism in symbolism, theosophy and spiritualism. Psychology, Far Eastern influences and the quest for the ‘new man’ also played a central role. The exhibition shows how closely modernism and magic were linked – with a critical look at utopias of the past and present.

The exhibition sheds light on how key modern artists – including Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann and Käthe Kollwitz – were inspired by the dark, spiritual and existential themes of Gothic art. Their works combine medieval symbolism with the fears and hopes of modernity and impressively show how Gothic imagery found a new form of expression in the 20th century.

What can you expect?
The exhibition at the Belvedere presents highlights from the Villa Langmatt collection – one of the earliest private collections of French Impressionists in Switzerland. Jenny and Sidney Brown began collecting works by artists such as Gauguin, Monet, Cézanne and especially Renoir in 1907. Their collection is an expression of their personal passion for art, but also symbolises the modern self-image of the Swiss upper middle classes.

I visited the Titanic exhibition in Barcelona (with my children). Tickets are sold through the same provider, but I can’t say at this point whether it will be exactly the same exhibition. We’ll stay tuned!

The exhibition presents new works by the Austrian artist that oscillate between abstraction and figuration. In large-format drawings and paintings, Pils explores the tension between intuition and structure – often in black and white colours, with dense, almost meditative imagery. The exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in a quiet, ambiguous visual language.

The exhibition presents five large-scale installations by Nikita Kadan, Barbara Kapusta, Frida Orupabo, Lisl Ponger and Anita Witek. Each of these artists engages with works of classical modernism from the mumok collection and enters into an exciting dialogue with them. The show combines contemporary perspectives with art historical references, thus creating new interpretations and contexts. With further works by Alberto Giacometti, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fernand Léger, René Magritte, Man Ray and many others.
