Albertina Modern
MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
In May 2020, the Albertina Modern opened in the Künstlerhaus as the second location of the Albertina. The stock of over 60,000 works by 5,000 artists is shown here in regularly held changing exhibitions.
My Rating:
The positives:
Austrian contemporary art by Maria Lassnig or Erwin Wurm! But German icons are also represented! A must for any fan of contemporary art! All of this in a historic setting.
The negatives:
But those who can't do anything with it are not in good hands here.
Tip:
Buy a combination ticket with the Albertina!

What is there
to see?
While the coronavirus has been haunting the whole world, the Albertina has opened its branch as planned: the Albertina Modern. And without really knowing it, we were among the first visitors in July 2020!
Everything was new and fresh, the exhibition spaces provided an open and exciting insight into contemporary art. But the “old” also glowed in all its splendour: for example, the beautiful, well-preserved staircase of the former Künstlerhaus, which was built between 1865 and 1868.
The Albertina Modern shows the history of art since 1945 in its temporary exhibitions and has amassed a huge collection of art in recent years: 60,000 works by 5,000 artists. The focus is – obviously – on Austrian art. However, there are also regular exhibitions on current trends, international artists (such as Ai Wei Wei, who we also visited) or genres.
During our first visit, the exhibition “The Beginning”, we came across many unknown Austrian names, but also more well-known ones such as Maria Lassnig. However, the fact that we didn’t see the biggest names here didn’t really detract from the whole experience: the works were interesting and overall, it was a pleasant walk through the new premises.
Our second visit was all about the Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei – In Search of Humanity.
Of course, the collection also includes works by Baselitz, Kiefer, Lichtenstein, Immendorff and Wurm!
Albertina Modern
A bit of History
The location of the “Albertina Modern” exhibition centre in the former Künstlerhaus in Vienna makes sense in a way. The building itself was built between 1865 and 1868 and has since been used as an exhibition centre for young artists of painting, sculpture and applied arts. Emperor Franz Joseph officially bequeathed the building to the “Künstlerschaft”. However, the idea came from various associations: the “Eintracht” and “Albrecht Dürer” associations. They gathered to form the Cooperative Society of Fine Artists in Vienna and launched the Künstlerhaus project.
From 1897 onwards, the society lost its standing as Klimt and his companions Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich, of all people, split off and founded the “Vienna Secession”. Unlike them, however, the association, which was renamed the “Society of Austrian Fine Artists” in 1976, still exists. Only, since 2020, in different premises 🙂
The building itself was under the sword of Damocles of demolition many times! But each time, the historic building escaped. After intensive restoration work – just before the opening of the Albertina Modern – the building is once again shining in all its glory.
