Colosseum tickets
What has changed?
After Covid-19, many things have changed in Rome and at the Colosseum. Only online tickets were available, and most of them were purchased by large ticket agencies, so you could buy them on various platforms (like here on museos).
And now there are changes again that we would like to inform you about.
Because the post-Covid variant brought along some problems….
- The agencies set higher prices for the tickets, and I never agreed with that.
- Small tour providers could hardly or not at all access the official tickets. The Colosseum failed to give these guides a priority purchase or at least set aside a separate quota for the tour teams.
- The official Colosseum website was always sold out. You couldn't get tickets there anymore.
- There was even a ticket black market on-site because the admission tickets were in such high demand.
- A spontaneous visit to the Colosseum was impossible.
HOW HAS IT BEEN
SO FAR IN 2023?
Since March 2023, Rome has been particularly chaotic. It seems to be the busiest year for tourism in the city. The streets and major attractions are overrun with tourists.
That’s why in May 2023, the Colosseum decided to reopen the on-site ticket counters. They sell remaining tickets for specific time slots. So, you could stand in line, wait for an hour, and then purchase a ticket for a few hours later, but only while supplies last.
In September 2023, the Colosseum decided not to sell tickets to agencies in the same way as before. Agencies can still sell tickets, but only in combination with something else:
- The Hop-on Bus
- A guided tour
- A multimedia video
- or admission to the Prison of Peter.
Our tip
We believe that visiting the Colosseum with a guided tour is always a good idea. It’s the best way to truly understand the historical significance of the building. So, the combination with a guided tour is not a bad option at all!
COLOSSEUM TICKETS WITHOUT GUIDED TOUR
OCTOBER 2023
Since October 18, 2023, several changes have taken place.
For a few days now, the Colosseum only issues personalized tickets. This not only complicates the (online) ticket purchase but also access on-site because they check whether the name on the ticket matches the name of the person.
The process can take a long time, especially when children want to enter the Colosseum. Children’s tickets cannot be purchased online; they can only be obtained on-site at the entrance. The staff not only checks the age, but also requires the complete name to issue the admission ticket.
Additional ticket counters have been opened on-site to allow more people to enter the Colosseum. However, the lines are still incredibly long, and you may have to wait for at least an hour.
Our recommendation: Book tickets with a guided tour here. This way, you can avoid all the hassle of the booking.
SUMMARY OF THE
MOST IMPORTANT POINTS
Colosseum Official Website
In general, we at museos advise against purchasing an admission ticket through the official website because it is
a) quite complicated and
b) not very predictable to obtain a ticket.
- Spontaneous online ticket purchases through the official website are currently not possible. However, if you plan ahead (at least 1 month in advance), you can now purchase tickets online for specific time slots. It's important to note that on certain days, availability is increased and refreshed. Availability for the following week is typically increased one week in advance, but you need to be quick when making the purchase.
- Online, you can only purchase adult tickets and youth tickets (18-25 years old), NOT free children's tickets. Please note that even if you have a Roma Pass, you still need to reserve the ticket online.
- The ticket price has been increased by 1 Euro ("DGM Charge") since then.
