until 5 July 2024
at the Fabrique des Lumières
With their second round of immersive exhibitions, the organisers of the Fabrique des Lumières are staying true to their successful concept from last year. In the former Westergasfabriek building, they bring art to life with the help of modern video projections. The musical accompaniment makes this exhibition an experience for the senses. In just under 50 minutes, a symphony of colours, sounds and movement is created from more than 325 works by 50 artists.
Boris was there for us and gives the exhibition a 5-star rating!

The details
at a glance
The first part shows the works of the “Dutch Masters” of the 17th century as well as paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. Rembrandt’s portraits, usually captured on canvas, fill the entire space of the cathedral-like hall. The “Girl with a Pearl Earring” seems to give you a look that was originally reserved for Vermeer (and reminds us of the Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in early 2023…).
The flowers in the still lifes virtually explode on the projection screen, as if they had been waiting for this very moment for centuries. You become part of a naval battle in stormy seas and experience a romantic night under Van Gogh’s starry sky.
By visiting the exhibition, you will be able to explore works that are normally found in European museums. Go to the Louvre with Vermeer to see the “Lace Maker”. With the painting “The Bull” by Paulus Potter & Vermeer’s pearl earrings, you go to the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
Rembrandt’s “Night Watch” will take you to the Rijksmuseum, Vermeer’s “Geographers” to the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main and Van Gogh’s “Starry Night over the Rhone” to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
This part of the immersive exhibition lasts 34 minutes.

About the exhibitions
The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the painter Piet Mondrian. Under the heading “Abundance of Colour “, visitors can experience the painter’s artistic development from his beginnings in classical painting to his visionary style of strictly geometric forms that made him famous worldwide.
This allows us to gain a unique overview of the painter’s work in just 14 minutes!
The artistic journey, which began in the 17th century, finally ends with the contemporary video installation “Invinitive Horizon” by Direction & Design: HKI-Hellohikimori | Production: Culturespaces Studio®. Here you seem to float towards a never-ending horizon.
While the landscapes and shapes around you are constantly changing, their presentation on all four sides of the room creates a perspective-breaking suction effect. The rules of physics seem to have no power here.
All three parts can be visited with one ticket.
Summery
The manipulation of masterpieces may seem almost blasphemous to some museum visitors. For me personally, this modern and playful approach to the paintings creates a wonderful paintings creates a wonderful experience that touches me anew every time. It gives a wide audience of all ages a new approach to art. Why shouldn’t art be fun?
Remember to secure your tickets and the time slot that suits you in good time. The number of visitors is limited.
