Fabrique des Lumieres
Immersive Experience
Fabrique des Lumieres
You don’t have to be an art connoisseur to enjoy a visit to the Fabrique des Lumières. The dimensions of the projection screens are impressive enough, but experiencing the images in an entirely different, new way guarantees an exceptional experience.
Unfortunately, the information on the works and artists is limited to the display boards in the passageway and in the adjoining room. We would have liked to have been able to call them up in another way, as an audio guide, for example. But that would probably distract too much from the installation. Personally, we are already looking forward to our next visit to the Fabrique.
My rating:
The positives:
Impressive combination of old architect and modern technology. The changing exhibitions can be a good introduction to art (especially for children).
The negatives:
Of course, original works of art are always better, but you can't always get everywhere.
The Location is also a bit off the beaten track. ;)

WHAT IS THERE
TO SEE?
You enter the Fabrique des Lumières through a modern entrance gate. Inside, however, old building fabric merges with modern design made of steel, glass and concrete.
You enter the exhibition through a corridor whose design is reminiscent of an old ventilation shaft. This is followed by a small exhibition with films and pictures of the old Westerngasfabriek, where the Fabrique des Lumieres has been located since 2021.
And then you stand in the larger of two exhibition rooms. On 1,230 square metres and with a maximum ceiling height of 17 metres, the installations about Dalí and Gaudí are currently presented here. (until December 2023).
With the Fabrique des Lumières, the Culturspaces team under Bruno Monnier aims to offer an unforgettable artistic experience in which the visitor is immersed in another world.
This is made possible by more than 100 projectors illuminating a total projection area of 3,800 square metres and a high-quality sound system. The combination of visual and acoustic stimuli allows us to experience the artworks in an entirely new way.
The works of Dali, normally frozen on the canvas, or the arches and balustrades of Gaudí carved in stone are brought to life. Individual details are highlighted and set in motion. Accompanied by music and song, they float over walls and floors and you, the visitor, find yourself in the middle of it all.
You can move freely around the room during the performance. Climb the stairs to the balcony and enjoy the spectacle from a bird’s eye view. Or simply take a seat on the seats reminiscent of inverted cable reels.
There is no time limit. At the end of each show, there is a two-minute break before it starts again. So, you can take your time.
There are two pavilions in the space. In one, you can become an interactive part of the installation, while in the second room you will find a special hall of mirrors.
In the middle of the hall, you will find a passageway on the outer wall, through which you can enter a round room. There, the visitor can see the works in their entirety, the excerpts of which are currently part of the light show.
When the presentation is over, follow the signs to the studio. In an anteroom, screens inform you about the artists, their works and the exhibition.
At just 110 square metres, the studio is ten times smaller than the main hall and is reminiscent of a small cinema. Video art by the artist François Vautier is currently being presented here. What makes this room special is the fact that you can experience Recoding Entropia lying on cushions there.
In one of the cafés or restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the Fabrique, you can review what you have just experienced. Or, if the weather is nice, you can take the opportunity to walk around the adjacent city park.
If you would like to visit the Fabrique des Lumières again, you now have the opportunity to do so at nine locations worldwide. How about a visit to the Atelier des Lumières in Paris, for example!
FABRIQUE DES LUMIÈRES
a bit of HISTORY
A more fitting location could not have been chosen for the Fabrique des Lumières. Originally launched in Paris in 2018 by the creative team Culturspaces, the project found a home in Amsterdam in April 2022 on the site of the former Westergasfabriek.
Where gas was once produced to light Amsterdam’s streets, a newly created cultural space for Amsterdam residents and visitors to the city has been created recently. The former factory buildings now house restaurants and cafés and host events and festivals. Even today, the renovated brick buildings exude the industrial charm of a time when a warehouse was allowed to be not only practical but also aesthetically pleasing.
