Light festival in Amsterdam
28 November 2024 until 19 January 2025
on the most important canals in Amsterdam
This article is a little reminder that there is also a light festival in Amsterdam this year. So if you still have time for a little trip to the Netherlands in December/January: that would be a good reason!
The 13th edition runs from 28 November 2024 to 19 January 2025 and this year’s theme is ‘Rituals’. Rituals have traditionally helped us with all kinds of transformations: from the past to the future, from winter to summer, from youth to adulthood, and that is what this year’s edition will show.
We will only find out what the installations will look like in detail on 28 November! We are definitely looking forward to it!

The 13 edition is also themed ‘Amsterdam750’. Because on 27 October 2025, Amsterdam will be 750 years old. This historic date has been celebrated here and there since 27 October 2024. And the Festival of Lights has also set out to celebrate Amsterdam: With light and art.
The motto ‘Rituals’ fits in perfectly with the theme, as a number of rituals and traditions have developed in Amsterdam over these 750 years.
The artists are mainly Dutch, but there are also some light artists from the UK and France. This year there are many Indian contributions and unfortunately only one German.
A well-known UK artist is Julian Opie! He is a painter, sculptor and video artist and is also taking part this year: but we don’t yet know what exactly he has developed!
You can find the list of artists for the 13th Edition 24/25 here.
We are definitely looking forward to these new light works and hope that it will be as beautiful as in previous years!
While you’re there, take a look at the other winter activities on offer in Amsterdam: Christmas markets, ice skating and great exhibitions await you.
