Light festival in Amsterdam
30 November 2023 to 21 January 2024
on the most important canals in Amsterdam
This article is a little reminder that there is also a light festival in Amsterdam this year. So if you still have time for a little trip to the Netherlands in December/January: that would be a good reason!
The 12th edition starts today and runs until 21 January 2024, and this year’s motto is “Revealing Art, AI and Tech”. One thing is certain: the canals of Amsterdam will be lit up again this year.
What the installations will look like in detail, we will only find out tonight! It will be about the impact of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) on our daily lives. How has society changed as a result of this digital development and where should the boundaries lie?

The artists
The artists are mainly from Netherlands, but there are also some light artists from the UK and France. Belgium and Hungary are also represented. And from Germany there are three light works by Aram Bartholl, Jacqueline Hen and Mischa Kuball.
What I’m really looking forward to is the Universal Everything collective. They just had an exhibition at the Disseny Hub Barcelona this spring/summer! The collective was founded in 2004 and uses different visualisation techniques to create new forms of imagery. Their work is often immersive, interactive and sometimes explores the realm of VR.
We are definitely looking forward to these new light works and hope that it will be as beautiful as in previous years!
While you’re there, take a look at the other winter activities on offer in Amsterdam: Christmas markets, ice skating and great exhibitions await you.
