The gondola has a long history and an important meaning in Venice. For centuries, these uniquely curved boats have been an essential part of life on the islands and, alongside the masks, have become one of the city’s most iconic symbols.

What you should
definitely know
- The prices for gondola rides in Venice have been regulated for many years and are set by the city authorities. This regulation ensures that prices remain fair and consistent, protecting tourists from being overcharged. However, just like with taxis, it’s still wise to confirm the fare in advance!
- The price of a gondola ride is officially fixed: during the day (until 19.00 h), a 35-minute ride for up to 5 people costs EUR 90. At night, a 35-minute ride (for up to 5 people) costs EUR 110. If you’re travelling alone, it’s worth checking out offers from agencies — that way, you’ll pay only a share of the fare.
- The “captains” of the gondolas are called gondolieri. You can easily recognise them by their typical uniform: a blue-and-white or red-and-white striped shirt.
- Gondolas were originally used as simple means of transport — even for carrying the deceased. Today, they are used mainly for tourism.
- Tip: if you’d like to try it out first, take a traghetto! In Venice, a traghetto is a gondola that ferries up to 12 people from one side of the Grand Canal to the other — and the ride costs only EUR 2.

The Magic of a Gondola Ride
The feeling
Boarding:
Stepping into a gondola might feel a little unsteady at first, but don’t worry – helpful hands are always there to guide you. Soon, the wobble is forgotten, and the adventure begins.
The Ride:
Gliding along the canals, the gondola almost feels like it’s floating on water. The sensation is unlike anything else – a gentle, serene suspension between sky and liquid, where time seems to slow. Depending on your chosen route, you might drift through quiet, narrow canals that reveal the “real” Venice, where locals go about their daily lives, commuting to work or running errands. On the main waterways, however, the iconic sights unfold before you: the grandeur of the Grand Canal, the sparkling expanse of St Mark’s Basin, the elegant Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the majestic Santa Maria della Salute, and the lively market scenes from the water.
The Water:
In the shallower, hidden canals, the water shimmers in a dreamlike turquoise-green, almost impossibly vivid, as if painted by an artist’s hand.
The Gondolier:
Most gondoliers guide the boat quietly and gracefully, allowing you to soak in the atmosphere. Occasionally, you may find one who serenades you, adding a touch of romance to the journey. If not, don’t be disappointed – sometimes the magic is in the silence, in the gentle lapping of water against the gondola.
Respect:
For those who feel a little hesitant, a small taste of Venice awaits on a traghetto: for just EUR 2, you can cross a canal in a 12-person gondola. And always remember to respect the gondoliers – their expertise keeps you safe and ensures your ride is as smooth and enchanting as possible. And they normally don’t sing…
My Experience Report
A Gondola Ride via Tiqets
In September 2024, I finally convinced myself to take a gondola ride. Somehow, it just feels like a part of visiting Venice. Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s as much a part of the city as St Mark’s Basilica – and gondolas existed long before tourists did. The gondola is older than tourism itself, so it’s worth experiencing this part of Venice’s history. 😉
I was travelling alone, and of course, I could have negotiated the price directly with a gondolier, but the rates are fixed: EUR 90 per gondola. That’s certainly worthwhile for two or more people, but sitting alone in a gondola would have felt a bit odd…
So, I booked a gondola ride through the agency Tiqets. This way, I could enjoy my personal gondola experience while also testing it out for you!

Duration: approx. 50 minutes (20 minutes of a short guided walk to the gondola, 30 minutes enjoying the gondola ride)

How Did It Go?
Our meeting point was just behind the Museo Correr, close to St Mark’s Square. We were given numbers and headphones so everyone could be assigned to the correct boat and follow the guide on the way to the gondola. Once on the gondola itself, the headphones aren’t needed – it’s time to simply enjoy the ride.
During the walk, our guide shared fascinating stories about Venice and the history of gondolas, how one becomes a gondolier, and what the most important part of a gondola is. Soon enough, we reached the boarding point, ready to set off.
I marked my walking route in blue and the gondola’s path in green – a handy little visual for anyone following along.
A Quick Note: Venice is dotted with gondola stations, and where you board can shape what you see. Start near the Rialto Bridge, for instance, and there’s a very good chance you’ll glide past it. But don’t expect a gondolier to show you the entire city: they propel the gondola entirely with their own strength, and half an hour isn’t nearly enough to cover all the canals. Instead, think of it as a serene glimpse into the city from the water, a perfectly paced taste of Venice’s magic.
The boarding was a bit wobbly, and the very first bridge felt incredibly close to my head – it almost seemed as if the gondola might tip over (it was quite crowded at that spot…). The gondolier tried to lighten the mood by asking who was visiting Venice for the first time – he said he was too. 😉
From that moment on, everything went smoothly. Our gondolier (unfortunately, we didn’t ask his name) was very approachable, answering our questions and sharing in a pleasant way: how long he had been a gondolier, that his younger brother was just learning to steer a gondola, and so on.
We glided through narrow waterways, where there weren’t any major sights – apart from a house where Mozart had once lived – but that didn’t matter at all. The calmness – no crowds, no cars (which is always such a relief), no noise – was simply heavenly.
Towards the end, things got a little more exciting as we emerged onto the Grand Canal: suddenly, there was so much traffic, which created more waves, and the natural ripples from the lagoon added to it. That was definitely the moment when the gondolier had to work the hardest. We admired Santa Maria della Salute and the Punta della Dogana / Pinault Collection.
And just like that, the 30 minutes were over…
Exiting was a little hectic, as our ride happened to be the last of the day, so there was some gondola traffic.
All in all, I found the ride very relaxing, informative (I hope every gondolier is as friendly and open as ours), and a perfect way to end the day. For me, it was the final activity of the day, and I was looking forward to my dinner!

The Construction Details
of a Gondola
Venetian gondolas have a flat bottom, which makes them perfect for the shallow waters of the canals. They are all painted black and have a distinctive curved prow. You may have already noticed: each gondola has six metal prongs at the front! These represent the six districts of Venice.
Traditionally, gondolas are made from a variety of woods, including cherry, pine, oak, and walnut. Building a gondola can take months and requires exceptional craftsmanship. Many workshops are still family-run, passing their knowledge down through generations. While the tradition is carefully preserved, modern materials such as carbon fibre have also been introduced, which help to increase the durability of the boats.

The Gondolier
Every gondola is propelled by a gondolier, who stands on a small platform and uses a long oar. Venice has around 400 licensed gondoliers. Becoming a gondolier is no easy feat; it requires a time-intensive training process. This includes learning the “proper rowing technique” and mastering the intricate layout of Venice’s canals. After all, you wouldn’t want a gondolier drifting aimlessly through the water.
Most aspiring gondoliers start their training as giovani gondolieri (young gondoliers) and work as apprentices under experienced gondoliers. After completing their apprenticeship, they must pass an exam administered by the Gondoliers’ School in Venice. Only then do candidates receive their licence to work as a gondolier – essentially a gondola driver’s licence.
Just like drivers on the road, gondoliers must adhere to rules and regulations. In addition to following navigation rules, they are expected to uphold the ethics and pride of the city, treating tourists with respect and courtesy. To ensure they never forget, gondoliers must attend regular refresher courses. Who would have thought!?
And here’s another interesting fact: women have only been allowed to work as gondoliers since 2010! Despite this, the profession remains predominantly male – partly because many visitors expect a “real” gondolier. Hopefully, we’ll see more female gondoliers in the near future. 🙂
The exact origins of gondolas are unknown. They were first mentioned in the 11th century, but who “invented” them remains a mystery. This is simply because gondolas were not originally seen as romantic symbols – they were practical means of transport.
It wasn’t until the 19th century that gondola rides gradually gained significance. With the rise in tourism in the 21st century, interest in this unique vessel has naturally grown, and the gondola of Venice has become ever more famous.
