How to get from
Vienna airport to city center
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is not actually located in Vienna, but about 20 km outside the city centre. It therefore belongs to the federal state of Lower Austria. Its official name is Vienna-Schwechat Airport or Vienna International Airport. Even though it is an international airport and the largest in Austria, its size is not comparable to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, but rather manageable. Airlines currently depart from Terminal 1, 1A or 3. Terminal 2 has been undergoing renovation work for some time and is to be modernised.
In principle, it is easy to get from the airport to the city, but to help you find the best option for you, this article provides an overview of the various possibilities.
WHAT YOU ABSOLUTELY
SHOULD KNOW
- Vienna-Schwechat Airport is located outside the Vienna public transport zone (Wiener Linien).
- If you have the "Vienna City Card Transfer" or "Vienna City Card Transfer+Tour", you can travel free of charge on all means of transport to and from Vienna Airport (except taxis).
- There is no fixed price for the taxi journey from the airport to the city.
- After midnight and before 5 a.m. there is hardly any public transport to/from the airport.

POSSIBILITY 1
BY TRAIN
ÖBB even offers two options for travelling by train from the airport to the city or from Vienna to the airport.
You can take the S7 express train to Wien Mitte (also known as “Wien Landstraße”) or Wien Praterstern or the Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof or Wien Meidling. At all four stations, you have the option of changing to the underground subway lines.
The ÖBB ticket counters and ticket machines are located directly in the arrivals’ hall of the airport and just before the platforms.
The prices for the S7 and the Railjet are the same.
As the stop “Flughafen Wien Schwechat” (ATTENTION: do not confuse with “Schwechat”) is outside the core zone, you need 2 zone tickets.
The price:
EUR 4.20 for adults (EUR 1.80 for the ticket from the airport to the Vienna city limits + EUR 2.40 for the journey in Vienna’s core zone)
Half price for children aged 6 to 14 inclusive
Free for children under 6 years
Holders of the Vienna City Card only need the additional €1.80 ticket from the airport to the Vienna city limits.
The journey time:
approx. 25 minutes with the S7
15 minutes with the Railjet
Both usually run at 30-minute intervals. You can find all journey times for the S7 and the Railjet here.
The Stops:
The Railjet travels directly to “Vienna Central Station” without a stopover, where you can change to the underground line U1 (red). The station after Vienna Central Station is “Wien Meidling”, where you can change to the underground line U6 (brown).
Stops S7:
Vienna Airport (VIE)
Mannswörth
Schwechat
Vienna Kaiserebersdorf
Vienna Central Cemetery
Vienna Geiselbergstraße
Vienna St. Marx
Vienna Rennweg
Wien Mitte/ Landstraße (connections to the underground lines U3 and U4)
Vienna Praterstern (connections to the underground lines U1 and U2)
ATTENTION: ÖBB trains are red/grey. The trains of the City Airport Train (CAT) are green. ÖBB tickets are not valid on City Airport Train trains.
POSSIBILITY 2
WITH THE CAT
The City Airport Train (CAT for short) runs every 30 minutes directly from the airport to Vienna city centre (Wien Mitte / Landstraße). A journey takes 16 minutes and costs EUR 12.45 in one direction or EUR 22.90 for a return ticket. Children up to the age of 14 travel free of charge on the CAT. Holders of the “Vienna City Card” and all those who book online receive a discount.
The CAT offers all passengers free Wi-Fi on the trains and a check-in facility for some airlines at Wien Mitte station.
POSSIBILITY 3
by bus
There are two bus lines that run from the airport to Vienna. The Vienna Airport Lines (ÖBB) to Vienna Central Station, Schwedenplatz, Westbahnhof or Donauzentrum. The journey time is 30 to 60 minutes.
VIENNA AIRPORT LINES
There are three lines of the Vienna Airport Lines of ÖBB.
The VAL 1 line to Westbahnhof (transfer to underground line U3) and Hauptbahnhof (transfer to underground line U1). The VAL 2 line goes to Schwedenplatz (transfer to the U1 and U4 underground lines) and the VAL 3 line goes to Donauzentrum.
Prices:
EUR 10.50 for adults (EUR 17 for a return journey).
EUR 6 for children aged between 4 and 6 and holders of a disability card with a disability of more than 70% (or EUR 10 for a return journey).
Tickets can be purchased online here, from the bus driver (cash only) or from the ticket machines at the airport.
POSSIBILITY 4
BY TAXI
The taxi stops are located directly at the airport exit. If you get into a taxi directly at the airport, you do not pay a fixed price for the journey, but according to the taximeter (approx. EUR 40-50 per journey).
You can book a taxi in advance by calling
0043 1 31300
0043 1 40100 or
0043 160160 and pay a fixed price of €36.
The journey takes 30-50 minutes, depending on the traffic situation and destination.
My tip
If you prefer the convenience of booking online with a reservation email, you can use this taxi service. I have already tested it in Paris and Rome and was delighted. You are greeted with a name sign, the cars are not labelled “taxi” and feel more like limousines. A bottle of water awaits you and – if you’ve also booked – the driver will give you your public transport card.
The journey costs a little more – EUR 65 – but you feel like a VIP and don’t have to worry about anything. You pay the driver directly!
CONCLUSION
Travelling from the airport to the city on ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahn) trains is unbeatable in terms of journey time and price. However, if you have a lot of luggage with you or want to be taken directly to your hotel without changing trains, a taxi is certainly the right choice.
No matter which option you choose, the Museos team wishes you a pleasant stay in Vienna! 😉
