The castle, surrounded by a moat, sits amidst gardens and, with its four turrets, looks as if it has stepped straight out of a fairy tale. Today, at Muiderslot, visitors can experience the Middle Ages and the 17th century up close. You can admire 13th-century armour and weapons and get a glimpse of everyday life for a castle lord during the Dutch Golden Age.

What makes a visit to Muiderslot so special are the rooms, restored with great attention to detail. In the dining room, visitors are greeted by a table set with all manner of delicacies from the period. In the fully equipped kitchen, a freshly caught pheasant hangs from a hook, and it wouldn’t be surprising if P.C. Hooft appeared at any moment to make sure the cook doesn’t let anything burn. The information and anecdotes provided by the audio guide complete this vivid journey into the past.

I won’t give too much away, but it’s definitely worth climbing the tower stairs and visiting the covered battlement above the castle gate. Thanks to modern technology, you can even “defend” the castle from attackers… how exactly? You’ll have to find that out for yourself. We had a lot of fun!

At the back of the castle, by the water, another surprise awaits. Descend the stairs into a modern concrete grotto, where a multimedia show on the theme of water — friend or foe — is waiting for you.

Should the brave knight and fair maiden grow hungry, there is a small café in the castle cellar next to the museum shop. It offers light snacks — including a very tasty apple pie — and drinks. Refreshed, the adventure can continue. Near the visitor car park, there is also a traditional Dutch snack stall. The sausage with special sauce and fries is definitely worth trying.
