Calle Varisco is not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense – it is more of a mixture of curiosity, insider tip and selfie hotspot.
It is neither ‘beautiful’ in that sense, nor creepy or particularly special. Except that the street is only 53 cm wide…
Nevertheless, many people go there. Perhaps because of a little legend…

What is there
to see?
Despite its simplicity, the street is a popular photo spot. Many city tours stop here, especially when it comes to the secret Venice.
The fact is that the street is very narrow, 53 centimetres. It is about 30 metres long. You walk past walls and pipes to a small landing stage for gondolas. And that’s it.
But of course there is also a legend surrounding this small cul-de-sac.
1. ‘Only those with a pure heart can walk the entire length of Calle Varisco.’
Sometimes visitors do a kind of test of courage in this street.
2. Other stories claim that the alley exposes and traps criminals: supposedly, the walls of the alley close in until you are crushed. But only if you are a murderer…
Both legends revolve around the poetic idea of guilt and conscience, with a little thrill thrown in.

A bit of History
In the past, narrow streets like these were typical of working-class and artisan neighbourhoods. The streets were deliberately built narrow to provide shade and/or make them more difficult to storm in the event of an attack.
Where does the name ‘Varisco’ come from? There was a family of merchants who lived in this district in the 15th century. They were involved in the silk trade, which was very lucrative. However, it is not 100% certain that the name comes from them.
