What You Really
Need to Know

  • Public holidays vary from country to country. Even if certain Catholic feast days — such as Ascension Day or Whit Monday — are days off in Austria or parts of Germany, they are not public holidays in Italy!
  • In Italy, three holidays stand out above all others: Easter Monday, 15 August (Ferragosto) and Christmas Day. These are deeply family-centred occasions, marked by long meals and, when possible, a trip to the seaside. Hardly anyone goes to work on these days — only those who truly have no choice.
  • On Easter Sunday and 25 December, most museums close. There is no universal rule, however, so it’s essential to check in advance!
  • For New Year’s Eve, many restaurants offer special celebratory menus. Advance booking is highly recommended.
