The STRAAT Museum can be visited all year round, in any kind of weather. Its location on the NDSM site, with converted warehouses, is perfectly suited to the theme of graffiti and street art, while also providing a striking contrast to Amsterdam’s historic city centre. The artworks are simply stunning to look at, and there is plenty to explore.

What is there
to see?
Even from the ferry dock, you can spot the enormous portrait of Anne Frank that adorns the façade of the STRAAT Museum—it’s impossible to miss!
The artwork, titled “Let Me Be Myself”, was created by the Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra in collaboration with the Anne Frank Foundation. Covering 240 m², it depicts Anne Frank and required 450 spray cans and 35 litres of paint. The piece aims to promote greater respect within society.
The STRAAT Museum of Graffiti and Street Art opened in this former warehouse at the NDSM shipyard and showcases more than 160 works by internationally renowned and emerging artists across 8,000 m². Regularly changing exhibitions highlight the versatility of the street art movement. In addition to graffiti, you’ll also find works in mosaic tiling and various installations.
As a radical art movement in the 1960s, graffiti and street art have made the leap into museums around the world and have long become a part of our culture. Their influence is clearly visible in fashion, design, and advertising.
Originally, this art form was a means of engaging with socio-political issues and expressing critique—a tool for free expression. Using public walls as canvases was not only a rebellion against the privatisation of public space, but also a way to make art accessible to everyone and spark dialogue.
On site, you can learn about the origins of graffiti and street art, explore the different movements, styles, and national characteristics. Information panels explain the themes and backgrounds of individual artworks.
But don’t be surprised if you forget to read the texts. Many of the works, some spanning entire walls, are captivating in themselves. They impress not only with their sheer size but also with their versatility of colour and form. The vibrant, colourful works of Latin American artists, often featuring fantastical creatures, contrast with images composed purely of geometric shapes or photorealistic motifs.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the STRAAT Museum is that all the artworks are created on site. With a bit of luck, you may even witness the creation of a piece firsthand during your visit.
The gallery, with its café, offers a unique perspective on the exhibition. It’s a wonderful place to take a short break and admire the exhibition from a bird’s-eye view.

A bit of History
How did the STRAAT Museum come about?
It required two ingredients:
1) the IJ-Hallen flea market, which has been held in front of this hall since the 1990s
2) a strong graffiti scene at the NDSM site
Number 1 asked Number 2 if they could brighten up the market with their art… and one thing led to another! 🙂
However, it wasn’t until 2016 that the plan to create a museum was seriously pursued. It then took another four years before the STRAAT Museum officially opened—at a rather inconvenient time, during the Covid pandemic…
But the plan worked! Today, both the NDSM site and the museum itself are popular destinations for visitors.
