DO YOU TRUST WHAT YOU SEE?
RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT AMSTERDAM
“Ripley’s believe it or not” is a cabinet of curiosities where you can really find everything! Creepy torture utensils, crazy records, rare “animal mutations” and sparkling music records. And there is a rotating tunnel – a vortex tunnel!
My Rating:
The positives:
An interesting alternative to the “normal” Amsterdam programme. Especially for children or young people. It is amusing, interactive and varied.
The Negatives:
It is like a circus attraction that you can't look away from. Fully geared towards tourism: loud and also somehow a little ... cheap.
Tips:
Really only if the kids don't want to visit a museum at all ;) or you really want to see such a "show".

What is there
to see?
This question is not so easy to answer at Ripley’s… A Votext tunnel, records, torture methods, traditions from tropical countries or small robots. How does it all fit together? What is the concept of this house?
Well… just this jumble of different curious things IS the concept of Ripley Entertainment.
But let me briefly explain what Ripley’s is based on: Robert Ripley, a comic artist from the USA who travelled a lot and brought back all sorts of things from his travels. He lived from 1890 to 1949 and opened the first Ripley’s Belive it or not in the USA. Ripley’s Entertainment continued this “tradition” after his death.
But what is there to see now?
You can walk through a jungle, look at the lip rings of African peoples. However, you can also walk through the “torture area” and see the most unusual methods of torture. Or you can walk through the music aisle and see the glittering Beatles. There are world records to admire, the craziest transformations of people with tattoos or piercings, you can see the little robot Wally or a two-headed calf…
Does that help you? Still not? Then you have to see it with your own eyes! 😉
RIPLEYS BELIEVE IT OR NOT
A bit of history
As previously discussed, it all goes back to Robert Ripley’s. A sports reporter and cartoonist. As a sports reporter, he travelled the world and came across the strangest things! If he could take them with him, he took them with him. If not, he drew them and published his comic strip Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in 1929.
From 1930, he even went live with a radio programme that ran for 14 years!
He opened his first Odditorium (odd – unusual) in Chicago in 1933 and showed what he had collected during his travels.
Robert Ripley died of a heart attack in 1949 – aged just 55. But his idea, his dream, lives on to this day – thanks to his team at Ripley’s Entertainment.
Ripley’s Entertainment continued to gather and develop: more locations, including Ripley’s in Amsterdam, TV shows 1980 – 1984 and 2000, aquariums and much more. To date they have 30 odditoriums, 10 mirror worlds, 9 moving theatres, aquariums and lacerraces.
