Time Travel Vienna
Vienna in 3D & 5D
Time Travel Vienna
With lots of special effects and a show programme, you will be guided through the history of Vienna. High technology makes it possible to travel back in time without having to leave the square.
My Rating:
The Positives:
Great 3D, 4D, 5D and virtual reality effects! Certainly something for families with teenagers and those who want to experience Vienna's history in a nutshell.
The Negatives:
From a historical point of view, time travel is very basic - therefore not suitable for those who expect in-depth knowledge. This is all more about the technology.
The alarm in the air raid shelter is an original recording and could cause trauma activation and anxiety - beware!
Tip:
1. book online in advance and preferably the combination right away!
2. you want to experience the history of Vienna a bit more scientifically? Then off to the Wien Museum!

WHAT IS THERE
TO SEE?
Time Travel Vienna has an incredible amount to see: from medieval Vienna, the Habsburg family, Mozart, Strauss and Falco to Klimt and Schiele. The journey through time begins with the Roman beginnings and ends in the year 2024. So far, so good… that doesn’t sound like anything special, of course! However, the journey into the past is divided into different stops/rooms. Each stop has a specific theme and is accompanied by a special multimedia feature (e.g. 5D film). And that makes the whole thing very special and unique!
A few facts:
- The tour can only be done together with a group.
- An accompanying person opens the doors to the next room.
- Photography and filming is strictly forbidden – we had special permission. The language spoken is of course Viennese.
- If you don’t speak Viennese or German, you can get a free audio guide.
PROS + CONS
IN ADVANCE
Before we describe the details, we would like to say our pros and cons in advance.
Con: The tour is rather simple in terms of content. It is very much centred around the often glossed-over history of Vienna (tralala Sisi and Mozart) and it almost sounds as if everything in Vienna was like a dreamland. This suddenly changes when the two world wars come into focus. From one extreme to the next…
Please don’t expect a deep insight into history, but a shallow entertainment programme! If you want to find out more historical facts, you can visit the Time-Travel website, which, unlike the “show”, is very informative. And if you want even more in-depth information, go to the Vienna Museum :).
Pro: But if you are simply in the mood for varied entertainment, this is the right place for you! The technical side of the tour is simply brilliant. Everything that is currently available in interactive technology can be found here: VR glasses, 3D, 4D or 5D rides… More about this in the next point.
TIME TRAVEL VIENNA
THE APPROACH
The first stop is at the 5D cinema. Wow, this is an experience! The seats shake, the wind blows through your hair, rats seem to scurry past right underneath you… With special effects, you fly over the rooftops and through the alleyways of Vienna: to a time when the plague infested the city, St Stephen’s Cathedral was still a building site, the Turks besieged Vienna and drinking coffee became a culture.
After this introduction, we move on to the “Habsburg Show”. Empress Sisi, her husband Franz Joseph, Maria Theresa and Emperor Maximilian speak to the guests and explain their version of history in a humorous way. Here you get an insight into the family tree of the Habsburgs, who ruled Austria for 640 years (from 1278 to 1918).
Then it gets spooky as you enter a plague pit. Just like in a chamber of horrors, you can expect a terrible surprise at any time, while the story of the street musician Augustin is told on a video projection.
In the next room, visitors can also take out their mobile phone cameras and take photos with Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka! Unfortunately, there is a little bit of information about the artists missing. This can only be read on information boards… At the end of the room, Mozart and Strauss are waiting to make an appearance. The two give an amusing insight into their lives and open up the room of music. Equipped with VR goggles, they take you through the history of classical music with Mozart and Beethoven, as well as Viennese pop with Falco.
Attention trigger alarm! The next stop is in an air raid shelter. Yes, you have the option of waiting outside, but you can also hear original radio clips from the Nazi era, bomb alarms and attacks from here. Not a nice thing. Really not! The war years should not be forgotten, but there are certainly more subtle methods. You don’t have to lock someone in a room and re-enact the war. After all, people who have perhaps already experienced real war will certainly come here… they don’t need to be reminded of their trauma so directly.
But after this shock, the journey through time continues on a cheerful note. A horse-drawn carriage ride is on the programme. With fireworks and snowflakes, you take off and explore the Vienna of today from a bird’s eye view. This sightseeing flight is a wonderful finale.
To BOOK IN ADDITION: YES OR NO?
SISI'S AMAZING JOURNEY
Unlike the classic Time Travel, there are not nine themed areas/rooms here, but just one theme and two stops. Everything here revolves around Empress Sisi.
At the beginning there is a really well-made, 20-minute documentary film about the life of the empress. It becomes clear that Sisi did not always have it easy, even if this is often portrayed as such for marketing purposes. Her relationship with her mother-in-law, the loss of her children and her illness are just some of the many challenges the empress had to contend with. Sisi was often travelling, where she ultimately died tragically.
After this insight, it’s time to change rooms: We board boats.
As soon as the VR goggles are put on, the boat tour begins. And watch out! It goes steeply uphill and downhill… Fortunately, if you don’t have a head for heights, you can simply take off your goggles (like Susi had to do 😉 ). The effects are really well done, so good that you lose yourself in space and time. Everything has been thought of: temperature differences, wind currents and boat movements.
However, the historical journey underground is anything but historical. Unfortunately. There is no special information… In short: great multimedia, poor content!
We would only award 2 stars for Sisi’s Journey: Sorry.

CONCLUSION
Unfortunately, we are somewhat divided here:
As is already clear, we are enthusiastic about the technology. We are divided on the content. Because we know our way around Vienna very well and Time Travel and, above all, Sisi’s Journey don’t provide us with enough content.
BUT: if you’re looking for fun, technology and a bit of history, you’re sure to have fun here. We can well imagine the visit for teenagers and VR/4D enthusiasts.
The visit is also a mixture of Madame Tussauds Vienna and the Mythos Mozart – combined in one show!
In the end, Time Travel scores with its special effects and variety, but could offer even more in terms of history!
