LLUMS DE SANT PAU
WINTER IN BARCELONA
THE LIGHTS AT HOSPITAL DE SANT PAU
Visitors to Barcelona during the Christmas season can enjoy a two-for-one experience since 2021: exploring the Hospital de Sant Pau, a modernist architectural complex that is a UNESCO World Heritage site and, in the evening, being enchanted by various light installations!
Jacqueline was there in 2021, and Céline in 2022. Both of us were thrilled!
The installations change every year. So here are the pictures from the previous year!
The themes are not only Christmas related. 2022 it was “The Universe of Light”.
We’re already looking forward to 2024/2025! (21 November 2024 to 12 January 2025)

WHAT CAN YOU
EXPERIENCE?
Hospital Sant Pau – I should go to an hospital?
Don’t worry, these buildings are no longer used as such. Throughout the year, you can visit the complex designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. He was a contemporary colleague of Gaudí, also dedicated to Modernism. And that is beautifully evident here!
From the end of November to mid-January, the large area transforms into a sea of lights in the evenings. The “Llums de Sant Pau” (Lights of Sant Pau) have a different theme every year. In 2022, it was “The Universe of Light”: immersing yourself in the secrets of the cosmos, galaxies, stars, planets, with over 20 installations.
There are actually four different light effects:
- Video mapping, which involves projecting moving images onto the main facade. This can be seen without admission.
- Colorfully illuminated pavilions, beautifully designed in the style of Modernism.
- Decorated and brightly lit trees, palms, and bushes in the garden of the complex.
- Light installations themselves, which you can enter and walk through.
The tour is designed as a round walk, but because the area is relatively large, you can also move freely in various directions. Be careful not to let the children run away because the light show particularly fascinates them! 🙂
Acoustically, you will be serenaded with Christmas music specially composed for the spectacle. All in all, very harmonious!
In a small bar (outdoor only), you can find hot drinks and small snacks.
CONCLUSION
As mentioned, we have been there in the two years the event has been held so far, and everyone was thrilled – from the grandmother to the 5-year-old children! Additionally, in Barcelona, even in winter, it’s not so cold, and the weather is usually dry. That’s why you can easily visit the lights of Sant Pau even with younger children.
The first two years were very successful, and tickets were often sold out. Especially during the early evening hours when many families want to go, the tickets go quickly. So be sure to reserve tickets online well in advance!
Such light festivals are now held in many places, but here in Barcelona, the combination with the modernist buildings and the installations is unique. So, during the Christmas season, be sure to visit Sant Pau in the evening. It’s something for the whole family!
