Winter Swimming
Winter swimming takes place in the harbor basin on December 26th. Why on Earth hundreds of (mostly young) people take a dive into the cold water is, quite frankly, beyond me. I haven’t seen it for myself yet either – after all, I’m usually with my Family in Germany during that time.
New Year’s Eve
Should you be coming to Barcelona for New Year’s Eve expecting a grand party in the streets, prepare to be disappointed. The Spanish usually celebrate the new year in the comfort of their homes with their families. Obviously, there are parties here and there, but large firework displays, as they’re known in New York City or London, are not common in Spain. In Catalonia, fireworks are only allowed during the summer – the Night of Fires or Saint John’s night, to be precise. Should you be looking for fireworks anyway, be sure to show up at the Placa d’Espanya nice and early – the city has hosted a public fireworks display there for the past couple of years.
Instead, the Spanish have a different New Year’s tradition: Eat a grape at every strike of the clock at midnight. If you make it, you’ll supposedly be lucky next year. On the other hand, this tradition prevents you from loudly celebrating or kissing when the clock strikes midnight… After all, you’ll be busy chewing! Oh, and make sure to get seedless grapes – for obvious reasons 😀
Prepare your winter trip with our articles!

NEW MUSEUM
MUSEU DE L'ART PROHIBIT
Museum of Prohibited Art
NEW MUSEUM: Museu de l’Art Prohibit
It’s not an exhibition, but an entirely new museum that opened in October 2023. And it’s all about forbidden art!
Lesser-known artists stand alongside well-known ones such as Banksy, Ai Wei Wei and Gustav Klimt. Picasso and Goya can also be found… What they all have in common is that they have experienced some kind of censorship at some point/somewhere…
And we were already there for you!
Tips for families
What did I visit with my Kids?
After 6 years, I had the idea of writing a post about those museums and sights I’ve been to with my own children. Sometimes, some ideas just take a little longer 🙂
But now it’s ready! And in this detailed report, I’ll show you which museum is suitable for which age group (up to 7). I’ll give you tips and honest feedback from the children 😉
Of course, this post will be updated regularly. I promise!

Other Events
The Three Kings Parade
The parade honoring the Three Wise Men takes place every year on January 5th. The “Magos”, as they are known here, arrive at Port Vell (the old harbor) on their ship. They depart the ship after landing and begin a long parade through the city. Their train moves past cheering crowds of old and young alike, throwing candy to the children all the while. The children then awake to find their presents delivered on January 6th – presents which, according to local lore, are brought by the Three Wise Men instead of Santa Claus.

Other events in February:
Carnival
Every year from Maundy Thursday to Ash Wednesday, a man called King Carnestoltes takes over Barcelona. The pot-bellied ruler organises masked balls, lavish parties and parades with creative costumes.
The festivities begin with the arrival of the king and reach their climax with the ‘Gran Rúa’, the Grand Parade. This spectacle consists of hundreds of costumed people and thousands more come to watch on the streets. Other neighbourhoods also have their own smaller parades around this time.
Special mention: ‘La Taronjada’ – orange-coloured balloon and confetti battle at the end of the parade on the Rambla, at Palau de la Virreina.
When: Date to follow
Llum Barcelona + Santa Eulalia Festival
Elaborate light installations decorate the city in various places. Currently mainly in the Poblenou.
This celebration coincides with the celebration of Santa Eulalia (Fiesta Santa Eulalia), patron saint of Barcelona and main saint in the Cathedral of Gotico.
When: Date to follow
Free event, but always very busy. So be patient!
