The Sagrada Família is the “incomplete church” of Antoni Gaudí and is THE main sightseeing attraction in Barcelona.
Construction began in 1883 and the officials are saying that the church is to be completed by 2026 – the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
Currently, the Glory Façade and the remaining towers (the final number will be 18) are being built, following plans made by Gaudí. However, Gaudí’s Nativity Façade remains the thing the Sagrada Família is famous for.
Its history and view from the outside alone are enough of a reason to go and take a look. But the inside is wonderful, too. Once you’re past the waiting period and enter, you can’t help but be amazed. You can love it or hate it – but you absolutely must see it.

Short History
of the Sagrada Familia
My Rating:
Tip:
If you’re not there to see it, you really can’t know how long the waiting times might be in front of the Sagrada Família. Is it really that full? Where is the entrance? And how do the timed tickets work?
And then there’s the constant changes regarding admission, the website, and prices.
As I live right around the corner, I can keep an eye on all of these things. Obviously, the “rush” for the cathedral is worse on some days, and better on others, but I might be able to give you a general idea anyway.
So, let’s go!

2. My experience
I must have been to the Sagrada Familia 15–20 times since 2012. I once lived just round the corner, I still pass it on my way to work, I’ve visited it with friends and family and especially for you. You could say I know it like the back of my hand!
Over the years, the admission system has changed again and again. From “queueing for hours at the ticket office” to the first online attempts to today’s version, where you can only get your fast-track tickets online. I’ve queued for you, I’ve done 5 hours for you and I’ve recently been to the towers 3 times for you… And I’ve even taken my children with me once!
You can be sure: if something changes – I will test it and include it in this report! I promise!
My Experience
Situation on-site
3. Online-tickets
The online-ticket market for the Sagrada Família is competitive, for me included – I am trying to establish myself as much as anybody else. After all, this enables me to finance my work and this website.
However, I do want to be honest with you and give you all the options.
Some frequently asked question for starters:
Which months are especially good for an online ticket?
All, because there are no more tickets on-site! But there are months when you have to prepare the online purchase on time…
November to February: There is no rush for online ticket. Barcelona is nice and empty at this time of year.
May and June: Those month are okayisch… But get them not too short in advance! It is always good to purchase an online ticket to optimize your stay in Barcelona if you don’t have much time.
March/April and July to October: Absolutely purchase your ticket online ahead of time. This will save you time, and you can make the most of your visit to Barcelona.
There are several points of sale:
a) Sagrada’s own agency
Obviously, the Sagrada Família sells its tickets online. You can purchase them for 26 Euro, and the App audio guide is included. Other things to add are a tour, or access to one of the towers as well. This turns out to be rather complicated, however – more on that later.
Every step is available in English. (But only EN, ES or CAT)
Enter the number of people, the date, and the time. The next step is payment – you enter your data and select the payment method (only Credit Card).
Your ticket is then delivered via e-mail: You can print the PDF, or show it on your mobile phone.
b) My partner agency
I cooperate with “Tiqets”. I’ve tested this myself, for both tours and online tickets. Tiqets offers the admission tickets for around EUR 30. I get a little commission for that. So, if you choose to buy these here, you’ll support my work on this website! Many thanks for that 😉
Tickets for people over 30: EUR 33.80
Tickets for people under 30: EUR 31.20
Tickets for senior citizens over the age of 65: EUR 27.30
(fees included)
Every step is available in the language you need. (EN, ES, FRZ, IT, NL, DE etc.)
Enter the number of people, the date, and the time. The next step is payment – you enter your data and select the payment method (Credit Card, Paypal, Giropay or Payconiq).
In this case, too, you get your ticket via E-Mail, and you can either print the PDF or show it on your phone. Keep in mind that the QR code must be legible.
Now you might ask yourself:
Why should I buy it through an Agency?
And I might respond:
1. You’d be supporting my work
2. The whole booking process will be available in your language.
3. Should you need support, Tiqets reacts promptly – and in English. And I am there for you as well!
4. You can also buy other Tickets through these platforms! And you will find some special offers and combination ideas!
4. Tours
a) Sagrada’s own agency
If you want to book a tour via the Sagrada Família, you’re in for a lot of clicking. You can find a tour in Spanish or Catalan at any time, but the English language tours are much more difficult to find. First, you need to pick a time, and then you can see the languages offered. This is no fun at all, and honestly, I gave up after five tries. But maybe you’re more patient than I am.
Duration of that Tour: 50 Minutes
Price: EUR 30
b) My partner agency
This is much easier with Tiqets. The tour will take 1.5 hours, so it is a bit more expensive than the Sagrada Familia offer, but also longer! A tour is EUR 49.50 per person, but it’s absolutely worth it. And other providers are even more expensive. The EUR 49.50 include the price of admission, so there are no extra charges. And you can stay in the Sagrada Família once the tour is over.
The Tiqets booking system is available in English (and typically, it’s also smart enough to recognize the language of your operating system – if not, you can switch it manually).
Tours are available daily. And if you book the tour before starting your holiday, you can adjust your other activities according to the tour time. Otherwise, you might have some overlap, which you would probably like to avoid.
5. Towers and audio guides
a) Sagrada’s own agency
The audioguide is inclueded to all tickets. But the towers have low capacity, so they sell out quick in high season!
You can get the audio guide through the website of Sagrada Familia for EUR 26 (admission + audio guide).
The admission + Tower + audio guide costs EUR 36
b) My partner agency
Interested in a combination ticket for the admission + audio guide + access to one of the towers?
There you go! Here you can purchase admission, tower access, and an audio guide for EUR 46.80 (incl. fees).
How it works: Choose a time for the admission and after the payment you’ll receive an exact time for entering the tower. In most cases, it’s 15 minutes after the admission time. Be sure to be on time for both admission and tower!
However, the same here: they are often sold out well ahead of time due to very limited availability. This is true of on-site purchases and the Sagrada’s own agency too, however…
Little information about the towers:
1. You will go up by elevator, but you have to go down by walking some (narrow) spiral staircase! Please keep that in mind when booking the Tower+Audioguide- Admission.
2. Children under 6 years are not allowed on the towers.
3. Adolescents under the age of 16 are only allowed to enter the towers with their parents.
If you’re not comfortable with heights, you might want to re-think whether you really want to visit one of the towers.
Additional
advice
The Sagrada Família’s crypt isn’t always open to the public. The crypt entrance is marked with the letter “e” on my map. Should the gate be open, I absolutely recommend seeing it. Admission is free, so there are no additional charges, but please note that you may very well enter during Mass.
The crypt’s architecture is similar to what most people think of as a “normal” chapel. However, it’s interesting to see the contrast. And you might also be interested to know that Gaudí is buried here.
Opening hours:
Monday – Friday: 9.00 a.m. – 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays: 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.
There are two shops within the Sagrada Família area, one on the Nativity Façade side, and one on the Passion Façade side.
Photography is generally allowed within the Sagrada Família, but only for private use.
VISIT TO THE SAGRADA
WITH CHILDREN
I took my 5-year-old children to the Sagrada Família for the first time in 2023. And they were blown away! They had already seen the Sagrada from the outside a couple of times, but the inside really wowed them! We were there much longer than planned!
There was a lot to see: the façades on both sides, the interior (several times) and the museum in the basement, which I haven’t visited for many years and which has now been made a little brighter, nicer and more interesting.
The children also enjoyed themselves there. You could touch materials that were used to build the Sagrada. There was a film that we watched in full and … the shop 😅
After the visit, we painted the Sagrada Familia in the restaurant before we had to head off head over heels for the boat tour!
Conclusion: Have the courage. Your children will be fascinated!

DO I HAVE TO BOOK ONLINE TICKETS?
Yes! Always – there are no tickets on-site.
But do you have to be stressed? Sometimes, yes:
Depending on the month, you HAVE to book online tickets in advance. Otherwise, you won’t get in!
The busiest months are March/April (around Easter), June – October (high season in Barcelona)
It happens a lot that I get questions in August or around Easter from people asking where they can find tickets because everywhere it’s sold out.
On the other hand: November till February is a very nice time to see the Sagrada Familia without any stress….
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU BOOKED THE WRONG DATE/WRONG NUMBER OF TICKETS?
No worries, they changed their strict policy.
With Tiqets your cancellation is possible up to 48 hours before your visit.
There is also the possibility to have more time – but then the price is higher.
With GetYourGuide it is the same: you have until 48 hours before your visit.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE LATE?
You have a window of 15 minutes to get to the Security check.
If you are too late, you will be refused by the Security-Team.
My recommendation: Better being a bit early, checking out the situation. Where is the entrance? Where the Security Check.
Also, you can enjoy the Sagradas façades a bit 😉
DO I STILL HAVE TO WAIT IN LINE WITH A PRE BOOKED ONLINE TICKET?
Yes and no.
There is only the Security-Check line. But they are very fast. And only the individuals with the same timeslot as you have, are waiting there with you.
WHAT TO WEAR TO THE SAGRADA FAMILIA?
Appropriate clothing is desired. That means:
- no shorts or skirts. Minimum shortening: Mid-thigh
- Do not appear only in swimming trunks / bikini
- Do not wear wedding dresses or dresses intended to attract attention for art, advertising or other purposes.
- Clothing should not be see-through
- No headgear
Failure to comply may result in you being refused entry.
WHEN IS THTE BEST TIME TO VISIT LA SAGRADA FAMILIA?
I would say that there is always about the same amount going on throughout the day.
But: you can choose whether you prefer blue-green light or red-yellow light in the Sagrada Família.
In the morning, the sun shines on the side of the Nativity façade and everything inside is bathed in blue and green light through the stained-glass windows. And in the evening, red and yellow – as the sun then shines on the Passion façade.
