FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
DO I HAVE TO BOOK ONLINE TICKETS?
Depending on the month, you HAVE to book online tickets. Otherwise, you won’t get in!
The busiest month are March/April (around Easter), June – October (high season in Barcelona)
It happens a lot that I get questions in August or around Easter from people asking where they can find tickets because everywhere it’s sold out.
On the other hand: November till February is a very nice time to see the Sagrada Familia without any stress….
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU BOOKED THE WRONG DATE/WRONG NUMBER OF TICKETS?
Thats’s an “ohoh” answer. The policy of Sagrada Familia and all the agencies is very strict. Only if you selected the “save choice” (Extra time to cancel) on Tiqets you will get a refund. But this costs extra…
For that reason: Always take a closer look at your booking. Check all the details like date, time, number of tickets!
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE LATE?
You have a window of 15 minutes getting through the Security check and into the Sagrada Familia.
If you are too late, you will be refused by the Security-Team.
My recommendation: Better being a bit early, checking out the situation. Where is the entrance? Where the Security Check.
Also, you can enjoy the Sagradas façades a bit 😉
DO I STILL HAVE TO WAIT IN LINE WITH A PRE BOOKED ONLINE TICKET?
Yes and no.
There is only the Security-Check line. But they are very fast. And only the persons with the same timeslot as you have are waiting there with you.
WHAT ARE THE COVID-SAFETY MEASURES
- Mask requirement
- Safe distance of 2 metres from others
- hand sanitisers at various points
- In order to ensure visitors’ safety, some spaces will remain closed (like the towers)
My Rating:
Tip:
If you’re not there to see it, you really can’t know how long the waiting times might be in front of the Sagrada Família. Is it really that full? Where is the entrance? And how do the timed tickets work?
And then there’s the constant changes regarding admission, the website, and prices.
As I live right around the corner, I can keep an eye on all of these things. Obviously, the “rush” for the cathedral is worse on some days, and better on others, but I might be able to give you a general idea anyway.
So, let’s go!

The Sagrada Família is the “incomplete church” of Antoni Gaudí and is THE main sightseeing attraction in Barcelona.
Construction began in 1883 and the officials are saying that the church is to be completed by 2026 – the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
Currently, the Glory Façade and the remaining towers (the final number will be 18) are being built, following plans made by Gaudí. However, Gaudí’s Nativity Façade remains the thing the Sagrada Família is famous for.
Its history and view from the outside alone are enough of a reason to go and take a look. But the inside is wonderful, too. Once you’re past the waiting period and enter, you can’t help but be amazed. You can love it or hate it – but you absolutely must see it.

Short History
of the Sagrada Familia
1. Orientation map
First Steps:
1. Ticket counter (closed during Covid)
2. Admission with a timed ticket, for groups and single admissions
After admission:
3. Audio guide pickup (not any more – only App Guides available)
Things to look at:
a. Gaudí’s Nativity Façade
b. Subirach’s Passion Façade
c. Gloria Façade, incomplete
d. Entrance to the museum
e. Entrance to the crypt
f. Stairs to the Nativity side tower
g. Stairs to the Passion side tower
2. Purchase your ticket on-site
The easiest solution is to buy your ticket on-site (1). However, this is not the quickest and not the cheapest solution.
In order to cope with the number of visitors, Sagrada Família has made some changes to its admission policy. Unfortunately, this doesn’t quite work as well as they hoped.
In the past, you would have to wait in line at the cash register for up to an hour during peak season, and then you’d be admitted into the cathedral. Local residents would always have a line to navigate through, which became annoying (and understandably so, to be honest). Clerks at the ticket office would deliberately slow down to avoid the cathedral from becoming too full.
So the people in charge at Sagrada Família thought: Let’s introduce timed tickets! The clerks speed up, and each visitor would now get a ticket with a time of admission on it.
My Experience
Situation on-site
My Test
First try: In May 2018, I gave it a try myself. I went to the cash register (1) at around 6 p.m. on a Sunday, and it was my turn right away. I got a timed admission ticket for 30 minutes later. In the past, I would have been admitted immediately, now I had to wait half an hour.
So I waited and showed up at the entrance (2) at Carrer de la Marina at the appointed time. There I was, of course, faced with a line. Granted, the line went through fairly quickly, but still, there were somewhere between 50 and 100 people going into the cathedral with me.
This may not sound extreme to you, but if you consider the peak months of July, August, September, and October and pick a different time, things will look completely different.
In early July, I spotted a line in front of the new cash register (1) for the first time. After all, even if they work faster, more people are going to show up in the next few months.
This means that the waiting times between purchasing a ticket and actually entering the cathedral will become longer and longer too.
I’ll have to test it again sometime soon.
Second try: August 2018: I waited until August before giving it another go. So, I headed towards the Sagrada at around 11.45 a.m., and the situation in front of the church was incredible chaos. People waiting at the cash register, people waiting in front of the entrance, people spending their waiting times looking at the facades. And even more people waiting to board the hop-on hop-off buses that stop here every three minutes. There was a lot going on here.
So, I went to the cash register. But before I could even get in line, I was warned that the next tickets would not allow entry before 5 p.m. I still wanted to test it, so I waited. And yes, that waiting period passed fairly quickly – ten minutes and a quick question later (would I be paying cash or with a credit or debit card?), I was in the payment area. The people who wanted to pay by card were guided to some ticket machines, which I can only hope are easy to use for everyone. I chose to pay cash, and got my ticket for 5 p.m. So, as a tourist in Barcelona, I would now have five hours to kill.
As you can see, it’s rather chaotic as a whole. That’s precisely why I’d recommend getting an online ticket.
Third try, April 2019
At 3 p.m. I asked when the next entrance would be if I bought the tickets on site. The answer was: 6.30 p.m. So, I would have to wait 3,5 hours. Online Tickets are really the best way!
3. Online-tickets
The online-ticket market for the Sagrada Família is competitive, for me included – I am trying to establish myself as much as anybody else. After all, this enables me to finance my work and this website.
However, I do want to be honest with you and give you all the options.
Some frequently asked question for starters:
Which months are especially good for an online ticket?
December/January/February: You will not need an online ticket. Barcelona is nice and empty at this time of year. But it is more expensive on-site.
November/May/perhaps June: You can either go with an online ticket or purchase your ticket on site, wait times will likely be around half an hour. Or you can purchase an online ticket to optimize your stay in Barcelona if you don’t have much time.
March/April and July/August/September/October: Absolutely purchase your ticket online ahead of time. This will save you time, and you can make the most of your visit to Barcelona.
Who should get an online ticket?
Those who don’t have a lot of time in Barcelona and don’t want to spend that time waiting.
Those who just don’t want to wait in line.
Those who want to plan their stay ahead of time.
There are several points of sale:
a) Sagrada’s own agency
Obviously, the Sagrada Família sells its tickets online. You can purchase them for 26 Euro, and the App audio guide is included. Other things to add are a tour, or access to one of the towers as well. This turns out to be rather complicated, however – more on that later.
Every step is available in English. (But only EN, ES or CAT)
Enter the number of people, the date, and the time. The next step is payment – you enter your data and select the payment method (only Credit Card).
Your ticket is then delivered via e-mail: You can print the PDF, or show it on your mobile phone.
b) My partner agency
I cooperate with “Tiqets”. I’ve tested this myself, for both tours and online tickets. Tiqets offers the admission tickets for around EUR 30. I get a little commission for that. So, if you choose to buy these here, you’ll support my work on this website! Many thanks for that 😉
Tickets for people over 30: EUR 33.80
Tickets for people under 30: EUR 31.20
Tickets for senior citizens over the age of 65: EUR 27.30
(fees included)
Every step is available in the language you need. (EN, ES, FRZ, IT, NL, DE etc.)
Enter the number of people, the date, and the time. The next step is payment – you enter your data and select the payment method (Credit Card, Paypal, Giropay or Payconiq).
In this case, too, you get your ticket via E-Mail, and you can either print the PDF or show it on your phone. Keep in mind that the QR code must be legible.
Now you might ask yourself:
Why should I buy it through an Agency?
And I might respond:
1. You’d be supporting my work
2. The whole booking process will be available in your language
3. Should you need support, Tiqets reacts promptly – and in English. And I am there for you as well!
4. You can also buy other Tickets through these platforms! And you will find some special offers and combination ideas!
4. Tours
a) Sagrada’s own agency
If you want to book a tour via the Sagrada Família, you’re in for a lot of clicking. You can find a tour in Spanish or Catalan at any time, but the English language tours are much more difficult to find. First, you need to pick a time, and then you can see the languages offered. This is no fun at all, and honestly, I gave up after five tries. But maybe you’re more patient than I am.
Duration of that Tour: 50 Minutes
Price: EUR 30
b) My partner agency
This is much easier with Tiqets. The tour will take 1.5 hours, so it is a bit more expensive than the Sagrada Familia offer, but also longer! A tour is EUR 48 per person, but it’s absolutely worth it. And other providers are even more expensive. The EUR 48 include the price of admission, so there are no extra charges. And you can stay in the Sagrada Família once the tour is over.
The Tiqets booking system is available in English (and typically, it’s also smart enough to recognize the language of your operating system – if not, you can switch it manually).
Tours are available daily. And if you book the tour before starting your holiday, you can adjust your other activities according to the tour time. Otherwise, you might have some overlap, which you would probably like to avoid.
5. Towers and audio guides
Now it gets really complicated!
Since March 2016 you can’t buy an audio guide or the tower visit after entering the church. Before, you could buy the audio guide inside if you weren’t sure if you need it. But this changed: now you have to decide before!
a) Sagrada’s own agency
Theoretically, you can purchase both the admission and audio guide online via the Sagrada Família’s provider. The audio guide is easy to add, but the towers are yet another click-joy to behold. If you book well ahead of time, it’s not so bad, but short-notice online bookings could make it more complicated because the tickets for the towers are also timed (and limited in numbers). For instance, if you purchase a ticket for the Sagrada Família for 12 p.m., but the 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. time slots for the towers are all taken, you’ll either have to change everything around, or spend three hours inside the Sagrada Família.
You can get the audio guide through the website of Sagrada Familia for EUR 26 (admission + audio guide).
The admission + Tower + audio guide costs EUR 38 on site and EUR 33 online.
b) My partner agency
Interested in a combination ticket for the admission + audio guide + access to one of the towers?
There you go! Here you can purchase admission, tower access, and an audio guide for EUR 41.25 (incl. fees).
How it works: Choose a time for the admission and after the payment you’ll receive an exact time for entering the tower. In most cases, it’s 15 minutes after the admission time. Be sure to be on time for both admission and tower!
However, I have been warned that the tower tickets in particular are often sold out well ahead of time due to very limited availability. This is true of on-site purchases and the Sagrada’s own agency too, however…
Little information about the towers:
1. You will go up by elevator, but you have to go down by walking some (narrow) spiral staircase! Please keep that in mind when booking the Tower+Audioguide- Admission.
2. Children under 6 years are not allowed on the towers.
3. Adolescent under the age of 16 are only allowed to enter the towers with their parents.
If you’re not comfortable with heights, you might want to re-think whether you really want to visit one of the towers.
Additional
advice
Piece of advice: It is not easy to cancel the tickets for the Sagrada Familia. On Tiqets only if you added the “save choice” for refundable tixkets. So be attentive when booking your tickets: check your order and be sure you booked the right offer!
The Sagrada Família’s crypt isn’t always open to the public. The crypt entrance is marked with the letter “e” on my map. Should the gate be open, I absolutely recommend seeing it. Admission is free, so there are no additional charges, but please note that you may very well enter during Mass.
The crypt’s architecture is similar to what most people think of as a “normal” chapel. However, it’s interesting to see the contrast. And you might also be interested to know that Gaudí is buried here.
Opening hours:
Monday – Friday: 9.00 a.m. – 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays: 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.
There are two shops within the Sagrada Família area, one on the Nativity Façade side, and one on the Passion Façade side.
Photography is generally allowed within the Sagrada Família, but only for private use.
