IDEAL CENTRE D'ARTS DIGITALS
THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
At the IDEAL center, a wide variety of immersive exhibitions alternate. You “immerse yourself” in a virtual world: works of art or photographs come to life throughout the room, accompanied by music and at the end there is usually a journey with the VR glasses!
My Rating:
The Positives:
Before you don't look at any art at all, go there! :D For children also a nice introduction to the world of art...
The negatives:
But of course you can't compare that to looking at the original artwork!
Tip:
Anyone who has problems with fast moving images should skip this.

What is there
to see?
The “new” IDEAL center has been in the up-and-coming Poblenou district of Barcelona since 2019. Since then, we have visited 4 exhibitions there, or should we say immersive experiences.
On the one hand, the experience of Monet, Klimt, Frida Kahlo and Dali.
The structure was similar. First you walk down a long corridor where you can learn everything about the life of the artist or the time. Take your time reading, as this is a good way to place the artist in his time or understand his art (text also in English).
You start by looking at a few smaller rooms that focus on a theme or give kids a place to explore or paint.
And then comes the highlight of the experience: the large hall, which begins with the immersive immersion from the floor and over the walls. Just take a seat somewhere and see what happens!
The image sequences show you works of art from the respective exhibition. So, you dive into Monet’s water lily ponds or get caught by Klimt’s golden waves. The music is chosen appropriately. You can meet the artists’ life stations, see a large part of their works – in one room, in one city – while sitting 😉
After that, there is a final task: the VR glasses. The first time, I would rather not do it – because of Covid. Luckily, I did because I was brought to tears. I could “walk” through Monet’s garden in Giverny and walk in the snow or in the cornfields of France! Just beautiful! With Klimt, on the other hand, one encounters the individual works in a black space atmosphere.
My kids also tried the VR-Glasses at the Frida Kahlo exhibitions, but they were scared by the sculls (they were only 4 years old). But they enjoyed the whole rest of the exhibition and are now in love with Frida Kahlo!
Afterwards, there is sometimes the opportunity to take a special farewell photo. With Monet it was a flower bridge and with Klimt it was a photo booth that turns you into a Klimt character…

A bit of History
Above I mentioned that the “new” IDEAL opened in 2019. The center where you can digitally immerse yourself in the art world. Before that, the IDEAL was a cinema…
And that was opened back in 1917. The “Cine Ideal” became one of the most important cinemas in the city and was popularly called “The Slippery” (El Rellisquín) because there used to be an old ice rink there. At that time, it had 2500 seats and on the weekends people even queued up for important films, so standing room was also offered.
In May 1984, however, they stopped their work, and it took until 2019 for the IDEAL to be renovated and reopened with a new concept!
