SHIPS AND GALLEYS
You can learn everything about shipping and the culture of the sea at this museum. The building itself, a 13th-century shipyard, is as well stunning.
My Rating:
The positives:
Interesting for lovers of seafaring. The cost-benefit ratio is excellent, and you're immediately surprised by the gallery in the great hall! There are changing exhibitions as well. Very interesting for kids!
The negatives:
... only, that it probably doesn't belong in the top 10 list for a first-time visit to Barcelona.
Tip:
A visit to the sailing ship “Santa Eulalia” at the harbor is included in the price of admission!

What is there
to see?
Maritime trade has always been important for Barcelona, especially during medieval times, when Catalan rule reached all the way to Greece. Here you can take a closer look at the long tradition of Barcelona seafaring.
The large hall is especially impressive – it houses a replica of the galley known as the “Real”, which last sailed in 1571. It will take your breath away! This historic galley was involved in one of the most significant battles on the Mediterranean Sea – as the flagship.
Afterwards, you can take a rest in the idyllic courtyard, and later continue onwards to the port and go see the Santa Eulalia. This sail ship from 1918 is anchored here.
EXTRA TIP!
VISIT THE SANTA EULALIA IN THE PORT
She is one of the oldest sailing boats (gaff schooner) that can still be visited in the Mediterranean area. The 47 meter long sailboat was built in 1918 and in 2011 it was declared “National Cultural Heritage of Catalonia”.
The engine was installed in 1928, so that the Santa Eulalia was not only used as a cargo ship in the Mediterranean, but also sailed to Cuba.
In 1998 the ship was renovated and restored to its original condition and since 2000 the entire ship can be visited.
