An exhibition hall named after the Palace de la Virreina on the Rambla, in which it is located. Here you can enjoy contemporary art for free.
My Rating:
The positives:
This exhibition house is located in a baroque building on the Rambla and offers a variety of exhibitions for free. This includes such highlights as the Ai Weiwei exhibition I went to see…
The negatives:
... as well as exhibitions of lesser-known artists.

What is there
to see?
In 2008, the Cultural Heritage Office of Barcelona opened the Palau de la Virreina, a place for cultural events and exhibitions.
With the ‘La Virreina Center de la Imatge’ (center for the picture), the cultural office of Barcelona has created a venue for events and exhibitions. Since 2008 the center has shown regular exhibitions on photography, but also events such as literary festivals and lectures take place regularly.
In 2014 the Palau presented the exhibition by and about the Chinese concept artist Ai Weiwei. “On the table” was a successful exhibition for me. You can find a few more pictures of my visit below.
Palau de la Virreina
A bit of History
The baroque palace, located right on La Rambla, was built from 1772 to 1778 for the Peruvian Viceroy Manuel d’Amat.
In 1944, the palace became city property, and hosted a variety of museums over the years. In 1986, the city’s Cultural Council moved into the building, until it was re-opened in 2008 as “La Virreina Centre de la Imatge”. It now hosts rotating exhibitions.
