Arrival of St Nicholas (Sinterklaas)
In Amsterdam, the pre-Christmas season begins in mid-November. When you see families making a pilgrimage to the banks of the Amstel, you know that the arrival of St Nicholas and his helpers is imminent. The sprightly gentleman arrives by boat in the harbour of the Maritime Museum. There he mounts his white horse and rides through the city to the royal palace.

What can you expect?
Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) was one of the most well-known Dutch photo artists. Famous for his staged images, unique lighting, and bold themes, he championed freedom, equality, and queer visibility throughout his life. The exhibition showcases his career – from early reportage photos to elaborately staged series such as “Grief” and “Berlin.” His political commitment and artistic perfectionism are evident throughout his entire oeuvre.
