ANIMAL FUN
A centrally located animal park, beautifully embedded in the Parc de Ciutadella. Biodiversity is high and some key enclosures have recently been upgraded. A visit is worthwhile with children.
My Rating:
The Positives:
A very nice place for families to relax. Thank the children for their patience with all the Gaudí buildings and museums! The zoo is very large and has a wonderful variety of species! In my opinion, the zoo, which is often viewed negatively, is not quite as outdated as is claimed.
The negatives:
The price is unfortunately very expensive at 21.40 euros. It may not be the number 1 must-see for adults alone, but those who are here with their children could consider the zoo as a small bribe.
Tip:
For first-time visitors to Barcelona, there are other, more important museums. But it is definitely a nice alternative for families!

WHAT IS THERE
TO SEE?
This zoo offers everything a child’s heart desires, as well as many an adult’s: elephants, giraffes, monkeys, crocodiles, bears, lions and tigers! There are also themed areas for lizards and “dragons” or the “Sabana Sahel”, which is currently being rebuilt and already looks very nice.
The area is so big that you can’t see everything in one day with children. You should therefore set yourself a few goals – on the way to these you will always discover animals and think: of course they are super exciting! You can’t plan with children anyway 😉
There are also many picnic areas and snack bars, which are a bit pricier. However, you can take food from outside with you without any problems – above all, you should think about drinks!
The park also has two great playgrounds – for the children for whom animals and all the running back and forth aren’t enough 😉
BARCELONA ZOO
HISTORY
The Parc Zoològic de Barcelona was built on the site of the Universal Exhibition of 1888 below the large Parc de la Ciutadella. The zoo was officially opened on 24 September 1892. The feast day of Barcelona’s city saint: the Mercè. So it’s already over 100 years old!
Over the years, around 7500 animals from 502 species have found their way here! The animals are spread over 13 hectares – no wonder you can’t fit them all in one day!
The zoo management wants to protect particularly endangered animal species in a scientific and sustainable way – and in their natural flora and fauna. They therefore work very closely with other zoos. The official strategies of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) are followed.
The zoo’s emblem, the albino gorilla “Snowflake” (Copito de nieve) sadly died of skin cancer in 2003 – he lived at Barcelona Zoo for 37 years.
