Museum of Illusions Rome
Between the ancient sight of the Colosseum and the pilgrimage church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome lies the modern Museum of Illusions, which provides fun and new insights! Fun for young and old!
Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday: 10.00 a.m. – 8.30 p.m.
Friday to Sunday: 10.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m.
My rating:
The positives:
It's an interactive exhibition for the whole family! If you go alone, the staff will help you take pictures!
The negatives:
The exhibition rooms are rather cramped. This is especially noticeable when many visitors are on site at the same time (and want to try out an attraction).
Tip:
Reserve your ticket online ahead! And: Choose clothes for the day that have no patterns. This way, the contrast with the colourful patterned walls in the rooms is easier to see.

What is there
to see?
The question “What is there to see?” should better be called “What is there to experience?”. Because even though we perceive illusions with our eyes, in the Museum of Illusions the focus is more on doing.
In general, there are two different categories in the museum:
- first: showrooms, which only make the illusion recognisable through the visitor himself and
- second: pictures on the walls that represent interesting optical illusions. Some of these pictures may already be familiar from school days, others are new. But no matter, it is always exciting to observe how our brain can be deceived.
Whether with friends, alone or with the family, trying out the optical illusions in the showrooms is really fun! (If you come alone, the team will assist you).
The museum is visited as a tour. So when you pass a room that needs to be interacted with, you have to wait your turn. But waiting also has its advantages! You can get an idea in advance of what you can and cannot do to achieve a perfect result – or rather a perfect illusion. By the way, you can tell when and if a room or an object is suitable for active interaction by the corresponding yellow markings on the floor.
Mainly, the rooms play with mirrors and different floor levels. But there are also secret entrances and special lighting effects. What always matters, however, is the appropriate perspective. For example, in a room you can immediately see that the floor is uneven, which creates the illusion. But if you change your position, you can no longer believe your own eyes because suddenly, everything looks different.
I was particularly fascinated by the room with the park bench, where you can easily make great “upsidedown movements”, and the room where you look huge in one corner and tiny in the other. Both times, the illusion effects are only really visible in the photos, but it is still so nice to realise that our brain combines at lightning speed, and it is the environment that then tricks us.
Conclusion
What is most impressive is the multitude of possibilities that are offered here. The longer you take to experience it, the more you will benefit from it. It’s about more than just taking a quick snapshot for Instagram. This is where you get your thinking centre and imagination in gear!
The Museum of Illusions is a lot of fun! Even if you think you can’t be fooled, you won’t always be able to believe your eyes here! 🙂
Ps: Jackets, bags or sunglasses (i.e. anything that might get in the way of your acting) can be deposited in small boxes right at the beginning of your visit. Use this possibility, if you can, to get completely involved in the “play”!
