KBr Fundació Mapfre
Barcelona Photo center
With this new centre, the Fundació Mapfre in Barcelona is putting its faith in photography. Changing exhibitions are shown in two rooms.
My Rating:
The positives:
It's a photography exhibition space without a permanent collection. Occasionally, there are really good exhibitions by great photographers...
The negatives:
...and sometimes only locally known names.

What is there
to see?
The Fundació Mapfre Art Foundation is located by the sea and is called KBr.
It is an exhibition center that regularly hosts photography exhibitions. In the past, they also occasionally held exhibitions of paintings or sculptures. However, they have now focused on photography.
I have already visited the following exhibitions:
Works from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris visiting Barcelona
Photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto
Photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson

A bit of History
The Mapfre Foundation was originally housed in the Casa Garriga i Nogués. In 2020, it moved to a new location on the beach and renamed itself “KBr.”
The name KBr is derived from the chemical symbol for potassium bromide, a salt used in the development process of analog photography. Its main function is to slow down or delay the action of the developer, thus preventing the formation of a so-called chemical haze. This results in greater purity in the white tones of an image. I think the choice of name is incredibly successful!
This also clearly sets the framework: this is about photography and the goal: “We want to give future generations an understanding of the photographic language and help make Barcelona’s creativity and energy known around the world.”
“Mapfre” is a major Spanish insurance provider that, through its foundation, has long organized art exhibitions in Madrid.
In autumn 2015, they also came to Barcelona, initially with an exhibition focus on modernist works of art (1850-1950) and great photographers, and since 2020, solely on photography.
