AERI DEL PORT
THE CABLE CAR OVER THE PORT OF BARCELONA
So I may have pretended the cable car didn’t exist for ages. And that may or may not have had something to do with my fear of heights… But I finally plucked up the courage to give it a go and I have to say that I’m glad I did! The view of Barcelona is just incredible up there!
My Rating:
The positives:
Unless you’re afraid of heights, this is a great way to relax and take in the stunning view of Barcelona.
The negatieves:
Obviously, everyone wants to be on the best side of the cable car to enjoy the view. So it can get a bit crowded in the small space.
Tip:
Book a return trip for two chances to admire the view. Make sure you also check out Barcelona in all its glory from the restaurant/café called “Mirador”.

What is there
to see?
Amazing views of Barcelona.
Just as breathtaking as you’d imagine. And if you’re interested in the workings of the cable car too, you’ll be pleased to hear that you can inspect the huge, heavy wheels and mechanisms while you’re waiting to board your gondola.
The cable car has three towers…
Torre San Sebastian is in Barceloneta, which is where most people get on.
Torre Jaime I is in the middle, if you like. You can’t get on or off at this tower.
Miramar Station on Montjuïc hill is the end of the line. This is where you get off. And where you get back on if you bought a return ticket. The motor that powers the whole thing is here too.
What can you see from the gondolas?
Well, you’re looking down on the city from up above the water, so you can see everything you could possibly want to see! The main attractions are the tallest buildings like Sagrada Família, Torre Glòries and the towers at the Villa Olímpic. And you’re definitely going to want to look out for Torre de Collserola up on Mount Tibidabo.
You should also be able to spot Barcelona Cathedral, the MNAC Museum on Montjuïc hill and the Columbus Monument poking up between the sea of houses.

a bit of history
The history of the cable car goes all the way back to 1926 and, you guessed it, the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. It was supposed to provide a simple and speedy way to get between the exposition grounds and the port as per the design by Carles Buigas, Ramon Calzado and Josep M. Roda. But in the end the cable car wasn’t ready in time for 1929 due to a lack of funds! The project was finally finished in 1931.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the gondolas were removed, but the towers were repurposed as strategic bases. Cable car journeys weren’t available again until 1963.
In 1995, the towers and technology were restored as part of a two-year project.
Facts and figures:
The journey lasts around 8 minutes each way and covers 1292 metres.
Miramar Station is 58 metres high.
Torre Jaime I is 101 metres high and
Torre San Sebastian is 70 metres high.
The two gondolas each hold 20 people – 19 passengers and the attendant.
