L’ou com balla – Thursday before Pentecost
The dancing eggs of Barcelona! There are unusual scenes to be seen in Barcelona on Corpus Christi. In the Gothic Quarter you will discover eggs in some fountains. These dance on the water and miraculously don’t fall down! This spectacle is called in Catalan: L’ou com balla. The tradition has existed since 1637 and the fountains are richly decorated with flowers. Back then, real eggs were used, but today they are made of polystyrene or something similar.
When: On Corpus Christi and up to 3 days after
Where: Gothic Quarter around La Seu Cathedral and its cloister, courtyard, Marès Museum, Lieutenant’s Palace (Palau de Lloctinent), Casa de l’Ardiaca, Pedalbres Monastery.
Sant Joan – La revetlla
A festival is dedicated to Saint Juan (Saint John). During this night, one burns contaminated sites and cleanses oneself of illnesses by jumping into the water. At the same time, it is the celebration of the beginning of summer. For this reason, large fires made of old furniture etc. are lit in various places in Barcelona. Children and adults play with firecrackers and fireworks and there is a big party on the beach with music, drinks and water jumps at midnight.
When: June 23, public holiday on June 24
Where: Main celebrations from Barceloneta beach up to Bogatell.
Primavera Sound
Primavera Sound is a music festival in Barcelona that lasts several days and has many artists in the line-up.
When: 4 to 8 June 2025

MUSEUMS Tip
MUSEU DE L'ART PROHIBIT
Museum of Prohibited Art
NEW MUSEUM: Museu de l’Art Prohibit
It’s not an exhibition, but an entirely new museum that opened in October 2023. And it’s all about forbidden art!
Lesser-known artists stand alongside well-known ones such as Banksy, Ai Wei Wei and Gustav Klimt. Picasso and Goya can also be found… What they all have in common is that they have experienced some kind of censorship at some point/somewhere…
And we were already there for you!
Tips for families
What did I visit with my Kids?
After 6 years, I had the idea of writing a post about those museums and sights I’ve been to with my own children. Sometimes, some ideas just take a little longer 🙂
But now it’s ready! And in this detailed report, I’ll show you which museum is suitable for which age group (up to 7). I’ll give you tips and honest feedback from the children 😉
Of course, this post will be updated regularly. I promise!

Fiesta Major de Gracia
Now this is where the citizens of Gracia get to go wild. Various streets participate in a decoration competition – and, of course, everyone wants to be the biggest, the most colorful, and the most creative. So you might start in a street with an Alice in Wonderland theme, and end up in a neighboring one, reminding you much more of the little Gallic village from the Astérix comic books. Beware, though: Some streets might go for zombies or a Jurassic Park motif, if the past years are any indication. We’ll have to see what they come up with this year.

A Month of Vacation for Barcelonians
August is a special month… because it feels like all the Barcelonians have left the city! Small and large companies and stores, restaurants and bars – many of them will close for company-wide holidays. But don’t worry: The stores in the city center, the sights, larger chains, and many restaurants will remain open nonetheless.

Other events
La Diada – Day of the Independence Movement
The day that Catalonia lost its independence back in 1714 is also the day Catalonians take to the streets to demonstrate for independence once more. Everyone gets out their flags, decorates the balconies, wears political t-shirts, and meets all over the city. Two years ago, more than 1.8 million Catalonians came together for the tercentenary Event. They created two large flags on the streets “Diagonal” and “Gran Via de Corts Catalan”, resulting in a hyper-enlarged victory sign. Amazing photographs, taken from the sky, spread all over Europe.
When: September 11th
Where: All over Barcelona. A specific place is usually designated as the main event, but regardless of that designation, the Arc de Triomf and the Placa Sant Jaume will always have something to offer.
La Mercé – Fiesta Major of Barcelona
Local saint Mercé is honored every year with a seven-day feast. The program ranges from dances and music to acrobatics, the Castelleres (human towers), the Gigantes (giant papier-mâché figures), and the Corre foc (the fire run – be careful with this one). Once the program is published, I will post a link right here.
When: Around September 24th, lasts 7 days
Where: All around the city, but mainly in the historic city center
